can be found in the Phoenix community of Ahwatukee. Ahwatukee is
likely a word from the Crow Indian's native tongue, awe chuuke, which
loosely translated means "land on the other side of the mountain".
Possibly named by one of its founding residents, Miss Brinton who moved
from Wyoming to Arizona. There is a prominent Crow population in
Wyoming and thus influenced her name choice. She bought the land from
St Lukes Hospital who acquired it from the original residents, Dr. and
Mrs. Ames. They had built a home on the south east side of South
Mountain but lived in it a very short time before Dr. Ames died. That
home was demolished in 1979 and pieces of it were used to build Our Lady
of Guadalupe Church in Guadalupe. In 1971, a portion of the land was
purchased by the Presley Development Company (uncle to the legendary
Elvis Presley) and was developed into a residential community. As the
population grew, more land was acquired from the state of Arizona,
International Harvester (who used the land as a proving ground), and
private citizens. At one time, a portion of Ahwatukee was a junk yard.
Hundreds of wrecked cars lined a portion of land west of I-10.
Ahwatukee today is an affluent L-shaped community bordered on the south
by the Gila River Indian Reservation, on the east by Interstate 10
including Chandler, Guadalupe and Tempe, and to the north by South
Mountain Park. It has a population of about 90,000 and although its
formal address is Phoenix, because of the isolation from the capital and
15 other suburbs it is always referred to as Ahwatukee.
